Contest Scoring 2007

Remember this has nothing to do with your grade (except you final project grade is based on the completeness scale at the bottom). It is only for bragging rights and a chance to demo your game to a few industry folks.

Based on the current number of projects you will each have about 10 minutes to present.

Here are the rules I will be using to judge individual games. I've built a spreadsheet around this and it looks balanced in what I think is important for you to take away from this class. Each student will also vote on their top three games which will account for 10% of the over game score. I reserve the right to be completely arbitrary in deciding and throwing out this system at any time, but I promise to be fair and chose the best and most complete game that showed the most ambition. I also reserve the right to throw out individual student's rankings if I perceive bias or an attempt to blatently effect the results.

The presentation order will be decided randomly (we will pull numbers) on May 1st. The winner will be announced after all the presentations on May 9th..

Here are the categories. Each one is given a score of 1-100 and then multipled by the given percentage. Completenss, creativity and fun are most important elements. The judges scores will be averaged over each category and a final score for each game calculated.

Each of the following categories will be given a value from 1-100, then multiplied by the percentage.

Completeness: (25 %)
Replay/fun factor (20 %)
Uniqueness (15 %)
Story (10 %)
Graphics (10 %)
Simple graphics that are used in a unique way will also receive high scores here.
Audio: (10 %)
Student Choice: (10%) (max 90 points = 18 students x 5 points each)

Add up and multiply that score by the following network modifier and add that to the final result
Networked/Multiplayer: (+15%)

For example - a nearly 70% complete version of a single player game.
complete game: 70 * .25 = 17.5
Replay/Fun: 60 * .20 = 12
Unique: 40 * .15 = 6
Story: 30 * .10 = 3
Graphics: 50 * .10 = 5
Audio: 50 * .10 = 5
Student Choice: 30 * 0.10 = 3

Sub Total = 51.50

Multiplayer = 0%

Total = 51.50

The same game, but multiplayer
complete game: 70 * .25 = 17.5
Replay/Fun: 60 * .20 = 12
Unique: 40 * .15 = 6
Story: 30 * .10 = 3
Graphics: 50 * .10 = 5
Audio: 50 * .10 = 5
Student Choice: 30 * 0.10 = 3

Sub Total = 51.50

Multiplayer = 15% = 7.7

Total = 59.2

A tie in the total score will be decided by the student choice votes. Another tie at the student choice will be decided by the total number of points on project assignments and attendance. A further tie will go to Wood's contest vote for best game and a further tie will simply be decided by Wood (someone has to win...).

A 100% complete and very fun game will beat out a partial networked game, but a partiallly complete networked game will beat out a partially complete single player game.

I have a very complex spreadsheet that will average the judges scores. You should pay attention to the categories when developing your games. If you spend all of your time working on a pretty texture for your player model and fail to implement a scoring system, your score will suffer. It might make a great demo though, so don't miss the opportunity to show something you you are passionate about. Remember, there is someone out there that makes a living breaking glass in games!

I will grade your final project using similar methods, but your ranking in the contest will not affect your grade in any way except that the presentation is worth 30 of the 100 points and you will be given 30 points for just doing the presentation.

Student judging will also be taken into account.in that students will be allowed to choose their first, second and third place favorite games. A #1 vote for a game will give that game 5 points. A #2 vote will give 3 points and a #3 vote will give 1 point. These points will be accumulated and account for 10% of the overall game score.

The definition of Game Completeness. Since this is where most of the points are, you should make sure you have all of these covered. I will keep a tallly and put check marks next to each of these and add up the total when I rank your entry. I can give partial points. This will be given to the other judges for reference, but they may have their own ideas on completeness and give an arbitrary score.
